Yaron Answers: How Would A Government Gain Revenue Without Taxes?

Yaron Brook

Yaron Brook is the president of the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) and the co-author of Free Market Revolution, just out this year. He asks and answers the question, “How Would A Government Gain Revenue Without Taxes?

The government, by his calculation, would be 90% smaller in a true Objectivist society (that is, in a society wherein Ayn Rand’s philosophy was lived out). There would be police, military, justice system. We would have to come up with other ways of funding these governmental functions, like raising fees. For example, when you execute a contract, you pay a fee that would cover the judiciary expense associated with upholding that contract. People in a free society do not want a free ride. They want to pay their own way; they don’t want to accept their services for “free.” Do you think that Ayn Rand’s vision for America is preferable to what we have now? Do you think it’s achievable?
